Scientific research has revealed that a baby can understand and express much more than what was previously thought. Babies are able to express their wants, needs, observations and feelings by using basic American Sign Language with their parents and caregivers. By using signs, parents spend less time guessing what their child wants and more time fulfilling their needs. When babies are able to replace crying with simple hand gestures, this communication will allow you to focus on bonding instead of being frustrated with one another. Signing will provide you with a window into your child’s mind; establishing two-way communication, improving daily interactions and strengthening your relationship. Furthermore, research has proven that babies who learn sign language develop an interest to increase their communication ability and this results in advanced verbal skills.

what are the benefits?
For Your Baby:
  • Allows your infant to communicate specific wants, needs and thoughts
  • Reduces frustration for your baby
  • Strengthens the trust and respect between parent and child
  • Signing will not delay speech development, but rather accelerates it
  • Promotes larger vocabularies
  • Increases interest in books
  • Increases creative thinking
  • Increases speed of spatial reasoning development
  • May increase IQ
  • Increases early literacy skills
  • Teaches a second language that is formally recognized (ASL)
  • Serves as a language bridge between English and non-English speakers
For Parents:
  • Reduces frustration for you
  • Reduces unexplainable emotional outbursts
  • Increases parental confidence
  • Strengthens the parent-infant relationship
  • Helps parents and pediatricians identify injuries, pain and other ailments
  • Helps parents identify potential dangers or concerns

how do my baby and i learn?
Incorporating signs into your daily routine with your child does not require fluency in American Sign Language (ASL), but rather it teaches that even a few simple gestures can help you communicate with and meet the needs of your child. Baby sign language is composed of shapes and motions made with hands and fingers that indicate words, concepts, and ideas that babies want to communicate. These are words like "eat," "milk," "wet," "more," "all done," "hurt," "sleepy," etc..
