Traffic related injuries continue to be the leading cause of death for children and youth in Hawaii. The main reason for this staggering number is the failure to restrain infants and children properly in their automobiles. Child safety seats are extremely effective in protecting children from serious injury and/or death if installed properly. Sadly, approximately 80 percent of car seats are installed incorrectly.

Keiki Injury Prevention Coalition (KIPC)/SAFE KIDS Hawaii has done a tremendous job in improving child passenger safety. However, they have limited resources, so Baby Guru offers the same service at your convenience. Many soon-to-be and new parents have had difficulty with scheduling a car seat installation appointment at the free clinics or inspection stations around the islands. In an effort to help them in their efforts and to keep children safe, Baby Guru Hawaii offers a FREE car seat installation course when parents hire us for any of our private in-home services or workshops. Baby Guru also offers an a la carte at-home car seat installation and training session upon request. Otherwise, we highly recommend you go to the KIPC website for a list of inspection stations to schedule an appointment.

At a Baby Guru car seat installation session, a certified instructor in Child Passenger Safety will review the car seat you have purchased to make sure it meets safety standards and will demonstrate how to install the car seat properly. Afterwards, you will practice installing the car seat with the instructor guiding you along until you are confident that you can do it correctly on your own. The instructor will also give you tips on overall car passenger safety, including a demonstration of how to settle a baby into the seat using a doll, when to switch a rear-facing car seat to forward-facing, how to adjust the seat harness to fit the baby's size, where to place a car seat to avoid airbag deploy, among other tips. Sessions are typically 30 minutes.

We recommend parents sign up for a car seat installation session before they have their baby so they can be fully prepared, but parents can sign up anytime. We recommend both parents are available to participate and you might even want to invite grandparents or any caregiver that might drive with your child. If unsure of what car seat to purchase, please do not hesitate to call Baby Guru for a recommendation.
